Planning for Life is a half-day interactive seminar that provides students with the necessary tools to plan for their futures. This three-tiered program visits schools across that country and promotes the importance of BODY, MIND and SOUL for leading a healthy, successful and inspirational life.

Planning for Life- PFL is designed to help students better prepare – academically, physically, emotionally and financially – in order to further their education and plan for an extraordinary future.

The Planning for Life program partners with organizations such as the Council for Opportunity in Education’s TRIO program, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and the National Urban League (NUL) to work hand-in-hand with the program’s sponsor, The U.S. Army, to give you the tools you need free of charge – to help youth plan their lives.

With a requirement to recruit high school graduates in a nation with increasing drop out rate we developed a partnership with education organizations and developed tools to assist students in graduating.  These programs were not provided to those interested in joining the Army but to any student needing help.

Army NASBE Partnership

On March 11, 2009, the U.S. Army Accession Command and NASBE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the purpose of improving the educational experiences, graduation rates and postsecondary preparedness of the Nation’s high school students, particularly those in underperforming schools. The five areas of collaboration listed in the MOU are:

  1. Comprehensive post-secondary planning, including Army/military service
  2. JROTC and its tenets as a pertinent curriculum model in the context of NASBE’s high school redesign project, particularly in the areas of fitness and obesity prevention and reducing dropout rates
  3. U.S. Army career planning and assessment tools (e.g., the ASVAB) and test preparation tools (e.g., March2Success)
  4. Army ROTC scholarships as an avenue for educating the Nation’s teachers, addressing future critical shortages, particularly in the areas of science and math
  5. Other future areas of collaboration, in keeping with shared objectives of improving the educational experience, preparedness and graduation rates of the nation’s students.

The NASBE/Army MOU

NASBE currently has three major initiatives underway that address the areas of collaboration listed above. These projects – the Common Ground study Group Report, Project PASS, and the Military edition of the State Education Standard, provide the foundation of a cooperative framework for the Army and NASBE to increase collaboration in supporting the nation’s young people and improving the educational experiences, next state preparedness, and graduation rates of the nation’s high school students.

In addition to these core projects, NASBE has participated in the Army’s Strong Students, Strong Futures, Strong Nation conferences at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina in 2008 and 2009.
